‘COMING IN FROM THE COLD’
The Big Bang Theory Under Attack

Einstein reflected and stated his case
T’was not matter attracts, in fact it bends space
Along then came Hubble who peered out afar
And saw there that light came in red from the star
And scientists thought and they puzzled and wondered

Now light would be red if it stretched just a bit
The answer was plain, they’d found what would fit
Just as trains scream towards us and thunder away
Their sound waves bunched or stretched in that way
Stars were receding, their light waves expanding

The problem arose about God!
Were we really so special? Was it not odd?
That from US all the stars were flying away
It couldn’t be true!   It wasn’t to say
That WE had prime place in the Universe???

Now scientists pondered this problem to fix
And pulled an idea from their bag of tricks
It wasn’t that stars were hurtling away,
It was space expanding and carrying them, say
So that all parts of space looked the same

And scientists mopped their brow …..
It was like a balloon you know
The distance expands but position is fixed
That’s why the stars, they have not mixed
Now don’t ask why they don’t disappear!

Some many years later it came to light
That space was an oven with a cold to bite
And photons abounded of microwave nature
Just energy bits of quantum stature
Very small – if you need explanation

Now stars that are hot look blue
And when they are cold, red is their hue
And the ‘oomph’ of a photon is more
If its star is hot to the core
From thermal spectra is this to be seen

Einstein’s famous equation
The energy mass light relation
Says mass when cooled must lose weight
And defined by momentum the light
Would ‘redden’ in this situation

The maths is not so easy
But if you know, quite breezy
The Doppler shift determines afar
The distance that’s travelled from the star
From the redshift and its equation

Now strangely enough, it’s quite simple
To determine the redshift again
From a simple exponential
Of temperature differential
It’s exactly the same equation  ….

A plasma can be of electrons
And this can be hot or cold
These quantum mechanical entities
A temperature can hold
But not for photons we’re told

Saw Compton that waves of electrons
Interact with those of photons
And perhaps this explains
How light cold gains
From the microwave radiation

Consider now the Universe
Its microwaves surrounding us
With photons filled to the brim
And a cold to haunt the grim
With photons.. and cold…. photons .. cold..

For the big bang theory has flaws
It’s breaking just too many laws
Speeds greater than light
Are just not right
But common with redshifts found now

Dark matter it needs to explain
Why stars from us do not wane
Why galaxies don’t fly apart
When space expands from its heart
A balloon with pennies glued on

Energy conservation
Another law in the pan
Expansion, it needed its bomb
But now, where’s it coming from?
The air to fill the balloon?

And where did that energy go
When photons of cosmic wave nature
Expanded and reddened and finally lay
As a microwave layer of heat decay
A vast energy loss unaccounted for?

With a slick and steady expansion
No galaxies would have a mention
Their age too is just not consistent
With the inverse of Hubble’s constant
And predicted Pop. III stars have yet to be found

For the maths you will need a true flair
If some say that it’s going nowhere
When you wish to know where it’s going
And find only philosophy knowing
‘Expansion’ may need redefining

Two solutions there were found
To our Universe profound
To Einstein’s relativity
When there was much activity
In the 1920’s, those many years ago

The first was that of Schwarzschild
A steady state its meaning hailed
But an expanding answer was needed
To explain the stars which receded
And this second was now employed

Only very much later
Came the data
To the attention of all
If you’d like to recall
Of the cold and the CMBR
(CMBR  Cosmic Microwave  Background Radiation)

Is it egg on the face that’s the fear?
Is it pressure from everyone’s peer?
To admit that it could be so simple?
To see complexity crumple?
Is it courage needed here?

Now intellect has designed
A maze to delight the mind
A construction of depth and complexity
Of nuance, beauty, dexterity
To fall for the sake of - an oversight?
